Instead of writing lengthy paragraphs on my concert experience, I decided to just list some interesting tidbits that I noted. ^0^
On the day of the concert, I headed downtown by subway after work and arrived at around 6:00 p.m. or so. I bumped into a couple of friends who were there earlier and got to hear bits of Jay’s rehearsal. XD Since the doors didn’t open till 7:00 p.m., I grabbed a quick bite at McDonald’s before joining the line-up. =P (I seriously think that must have been one of the most Asian-packed nights though I spotted a few non-Asians who attended the concert. ^^)
The venue was Air Canada Centre, which is a really good place to hold a concert. I’ve never been to a concert here before, but the seating is comfy and everyone has a good view since the seats are in rows that rise per level. ^^V I was in Section 109, Row 18, Seat 16 and got a pretty clear view of Jay, especially when he came over to my side. =P Heehee~ As the time for the concert to begin approached, the venue started to fill up. And by the time the concert started (a little late at around 8:15 p.m.), the place was jam-packed!! I could see a lot of peeps up in the 300-section seats!
For ‘souvenirs’, we each received a booklet and a red glowstick. =D (I took a pic of these and included it with my pics, which I will post shortly.)
The concert started off with a bang! The song was ‘Huang Jin Yia’, coupled with Jay’s elaborate costume and stage effects, it was really spectacular!! Since this was my first Jay concert, I was “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed”, eager to take in all the details. XD I brought my camera along and took some pics and fancams along the way; the quality isn’t that good, but it was mostly for memory’s sake of the experience anyway. Keke~
For ‘Bu Neng Shuo De Mi Mi’, scenes from the ‘Secret’ movie were played. (I really enjoyed that movie, by the way. =P)
During a talking segment, he asked if we’ve heard his new album. We all said yes and screamed. Keke~ He said that he will sing some songs off it and asked us, “How’s that?” ^^ Then he said that he will sing some old songs before new songs.
For ‘An Jing’, Jay rearranged the song and changed part of lyrics especially for us Torontonian fans!!! *squeals* This was during the verse the second time around. I wish I had taken a fancam of this as a memento!!
The lyrics basically said:
I came to Toronto to hold a concert (“wo lai dao duo lun duo kai yian chang hui”)
Saw so many people here (“kan dao zhe me duo ren”)
I’m very touched (“wo shi fen gan dong”)
*Note: I don’t remember the changed lyrics word for word; that’s just the gist of it ^^
For ‘Ting Ma Ma De Hua’, it was really funny to see the cameos of Chow Yun Fat and Jacky Cheung. Jay forgot the same line of lyrics twice. He kept singing “tian shi de mo fa” instead of “mei li de bai fa” in the chorus. He seemed to realize his mistake after the first time, but still sang it that way the second time he hit the chorus. *lol*
Later on during one of the talking segments, he said, “Ma ma, wo ai ni” (Mom, I love you) and told us that his mom was here; Dan Tou’s mom was also here. He then asked us to clap for both moms. Heehee~ He said that they had a long flight to come here. His mom went to Niagara Falls for the day, and then came back to attend her son’s concert at night. (The way Jay said this was really funny.) He also said that in his opinion, he thinks that Chinese people are especially “xiao shun” (filial), which sets us apart from other cultures.
He also mentioned that he was watching an NBA game here (ACC) last night and now he was having a concert here, so he felt a bit strange (“gan jue guai guai de”). Heehee~
‘Hei Se You Mo’ was a hit. It’s really great to hear these classics since it’s the first time that Jay’s held a concert here. ^^ The crowd really appreciated this.
For ‘Zui Chang De Dian Ying’, it was really cool to see the short film that he shot. I haven’t seen it before and I thought the storyline was interesting. =)
Then it was ‘Shuo Hao De Xing Fu Ne’, which was fantastic. When Jay was talking to us, he would introduce the song or comment on it afterwards. Like he would say, “How about listening to a new song?” =D Keke~
For ‘Niu Zai Hen Mang’, I was surprised to see him playing the piano to kick off this song. Prior to the song, he said that his hat indicated the theme of the song that he was about to perform. ^^ (He was essentially asking us to guess the song.) After that, he said “niu zai”.
The much-anticipated piano duel with Yu Hao was amazinggggg!!! Words cannot describe how I felt at that moment as we saw some clips of the ‘Secret’ movie leading up to Yu Hao’s entrance. He was awesome!! And then Jay starting playing his part and I was totally squealing cuz he was at my side of the stage!!!!! I was so mesmerized that I only took a few pics, which didn’t turn out very well. >.< I should have taken a fancam of this!!! Jay was absolutely spectacular as expected!!!
Then Nan Quan Mama came out and asked us if we knew who they are. Of course we all said yes! With Jay’s connection, how can we NOT know, right? XD Lara spoke to us in English. I was surprised since I didn’t know that she’s fluent. I don’t know much about NQMM’s members’ background (even though I listen to their albums), and didn’t realize that she’s mixed even though I’ve always thought that she looked mixed. *lol* Anyway, she told us that she has a friend who goes to U of T (University of Toronto), who showed them around town. They enjoyed the sights while “freezing their asses off” (direct quote from Lara =P).
After that, it was the lady who played the er hu, thus kicking off some of the more traditional Chinese type songs. I really liked Jay’s white attire here since it’s a great blend of traditional Chinese and Western style. ^^ At the start of ‘Qian Li Zhi Wai’, I missed the poetic words by Vincent Fang shown on the main screen because I was waiting for Jay to come on stage. Oopsies… XD During ‘Qian Li Zhi Wai’, he asked the fans from my side to sing along. Of course, I sang along and waved my board every time he was at my side of the stage. Bwehehehe… I saw him pointing at my side a couple of times throughout the concert after I waved my board, so I hope he saw my board–at least the “Jie Lun Zui Diao!” part. =P There weren’t that many boards or signs that I could see. I saw a blue lightboard that had the words “Jay” and “Jie Lun”. And some peeps brought their own glowsticks.
For ‘Qing Hua Ci’, he asked the fans at the other side of the stage to sing along, saying now it was their turn. Keke~
For the part when he played with the rope and toy thingy (not really sure what it’s called =P), he dropped the toy towards the end and flung the rope to the audience.
During a song when he danced (maybe ‘Ben Cao Gang Mu’), Jay paused in the middle of the song and asked the audience to scream loudly; otherwise, he might not feel like he wants to continue dancing… Pwahahahaha… XDDD That was so cheeky of him! He also asked us who he was (“wo shi shui???”) and we all screamed, “JAY!!!”
There were some technical difficulties during this set of songs. The large middle screen behind the stage went partially blue with a black background, so the screens (there were two smaller ones on either side) had to be reset a couple of times. They finally got it back after a little while, but it was too low (this was during ‘Ye Qu’). After that, they got it fixed.
After singing ‘Mi Die Xiang’, Jay went backstage to get changed and prepare for the next segment. The female dancers went off stage into the audience seated on the floor area and along the sides, and danced with some male fans one-on-one. It was kinda amusing to watch. There was one guy who seemed really into it. Haha~
There were various talking segments throughout the concert. Jay was really great in interacting with us. ^^ One part that was funny was that he said he waited for 8 years to have a concert here. He received such a passionate response from us fans. So, it was the right decision to have a concert here after all (“lai duo lun duo kai yian chang hui shi dui de”). Haha~ He asked us whether he should wait another 8 years to have his next concert here. =P But then he will be old then (“na shi hou wo ye lao le”) since he’s already close to 30 years old. He might not have the energy (“ke neng ti li bu zu”). *lol* The audience laughed together with him when he said this. He said that he should have a concert here every year!! When he asked us whether he should do that, we all loudly screamed, “YES!!!” =D
Then came the Acoustic Guitar Segment. *squeals* Jay plays a blue guitar!! (I’m giddy just cuz it’s my fave colour. XD) During this segment, some members of NQMM were also present. Yu Hao played the piano, Zhang Jie played the guitar, and Dan Tou (according to Jay, the one who’s less instrumentally-inclined but has a good voice) sang. *lol* I think that it was during this segment that he made a heart sign with his hands at some point. <333 Very sweet!!! *melts*
It was really exciting to hear ‘Dao Xiang’ since I was anticipating a performance of this track off his new album. The atmosphere during this segment was really cozy. ^^ He was talking to us about how with everything that’s happening around us in the world, it’s important to strive forward despite the difficult times. He really sounded very encouraging here and said that ‘Dao Xiang’ is a touching song. It makes people think of home. He sent this song out to those fans (well, he calls us “friends” XD) who are away from home and studying in Toronto. So sweet and thoughtful of him!!
After that, it was ‘Shuang Jie Gun {Romantic Version}’!! XDDD I don’t know if any of you have heard Jay perform this version before, but I thought it was really funny!!! I couldn’t help laughing the whole time and took a short fancam. I basically tried to take fancams of his performance of new songs or interesting bits. =P Anyway, if you know the meaning behind the song ‘Dao Xiang’, you’ll get why this is so amusing. He did this rendition of ‘Shuang Jie Gun’ after ‘Dao Xiang’. Jay commented that maybe the original lyrics of the song are too “violent” (“bao li”)? Hahaha~ =P He said that he will try to write more happier/cheery songs! He doesn’t always want to sing sad songs; he wants to sing some happy songs. *lol* He asked us to sing along with him. And at the end, he asked us, “Which version do you like more?” I screamed, “Dou xi huan!!” (both!!). Not sure if he heard, but he cheekily said that the model answer should be “Dou xi huan!” Pwahahahaha… XD
I put up the concert tracklist in my blog earlier mentioning that I don’t know when he sang ‘Kai Bu Liao Kou’ exactly. It could’ve been during this acoustic segment, but I can’t remember if he sang this song playing guitar or if he was roaming around the stage. =P I know that he performed this song on guitar at the Singapore concert since my friend went and took a fancam. XD (BTW, I saw someone waving the fluorescent green hand that says, “I ❤ U, Jay” from the Singapore concert. =P) But here, I think he was walking around the stage because I recalled him walking to my side and asking the fans to sing along. We all did while waving our glowsticks from side to side since it’s another classic. ^^ I remembered that when he was introducing this song, he said that now he was going to sing an even more touching song. So, he was making reference to the previous touching song, which was ‘Dao Xiang’. That’s why I’m a bit confuzzled about the tracklist order for this song. Teehee~ After singing ‘Kai Bu Liao Kou’, he said that the song made him want to cry because he was so touched. (I think he meant he was so touched to see our enthusiastic response and not necessarily that the song itself made him want to cry. ^^) At one point, he said that he usually performs in China or nearby regions, so to have received such warm support from fans overseas, he was really touched. ^^
For ‘Yue Guang’, Jay sang this with Gary. Well, it was mostly Gary singing and he only did some parts. =) He introduced Gary as his “lu yin shi” (I guess the person who helps him record his albums?) since 8 years ago. Now Gary has finally debuted on his own as a solo artist. Jay asked us to clap for him. He humourously said to Gary that that’s really good cheering for a newbie singer. Hahaha~
Before singing ‘Cai Hong’, Jay asked us to guess the song with the clues: 2 words + love song. ^^ Everyone cheered when he revealed the answer.
During another talking segment, he said that some fans (“friends”) may be learning Chinese from him. He strongly advises against it. *lol* He commented that parents may not know what he is singing. Hahaha~ XD He then said that if it’s a more traditional Chinese style song, he will try to sing more clearly. But for romantic songs, he doesn’t need to sing so clearly. That’s just his style. =P Heehee~
For ‘Yang Guang Zai Nan’, prior to starting the song, he mentioned that he had already done R&B, hip-hop, and now it was time for some rock. He asked the fans to stand up. Of course, we obliged as we sang along and waved our glowsticks to the beat!! ^___^ He also introduced the band towards the end of this song as it was the last song prior to the Encore.
Then it was time for the Encore. We kept yelling “Encore” over and over again till Jay came out. Teehee~ He was playing a set of blue drums as he rose from beneath the stage!!! *shrieks* Eeeeeppp! I was literally squealing!!!
He did a gu zheng intro to ‘Fa Ru Xue’, which was breathtaking!!!!! *holds breath* I couldn’t take my eyes off Jay playing the gu zheng. XD It was just absolutely beautiful!! Then everyone sang along to this hit, which is a favourite amongst fans. =)
For ‘Shuang Jie Gun’ during the Encore, he asked us to stand up. We were all really “high” then since this is THE song for a Jay concert!! Heehee~ We all sang along (more like shouted loudly) during the “he he ha hee” bits. =P He threw a set of nunchuks to the audience after asking us whether we wanted nunchuks. ^^
He also got us to sing along for ‘Huo Yuan Jia’ during the “huo huo huo huo… wo wo wo wo…” parts. There was a Jet Li interview segment shown, but there were problems with the audio during most of the clip.
For ‘Zhou Da Xia’, which I didn’t expect him to perform, we all chanted along during the “dou fu” and “gong fu” parts. =D
Overall, Jay was really cheeky and comical throughout the concert. He was very grateful for the audience. At one point, he asked us whether we like/have seen his movies. Of course, we all said yes. He then asked whether we could watch his movies here. He said, “If not, just buy the DVD.” (“ru guo kan bu dao de hua, mai DVD ye ke yi”) Hahahaha~ We all laughed along.
For dancing, Jay was actually quite good. XD During a couple of parts, he was doing the “drunken fist”, which was really funny.
All in all, I thought that the audience response was great! The seats were packed as I already mentioned. Jay said hi and waved to fans seated at all levels. He went to the sides of the stage, the front edge of the stage, even went to the “box” stage in front of the stage at one point. The audience spanned a large age range: little children… people my age (twenties)… adults… the elderly… Keke~ I saw a man in his forties singing along when the main screen was panning the arena. I also saw an old man, who was probably 70 or 80, seated on one of the floor seats. Jay’s just that popular!! ^^V
This concert is a real treat considering that Jay played the piano, guitar, drums, and gu zheng!! ^___^ I hope that I’ll get to see him play cello live one day. Heehee~
Wow, looks like I wrote an essay regardless of my initial intention to just highlight some points. Teehee~ Hope you guys enjoyed reading my concert experience!! I tried to be as detailed as possible in picking out the tidbits that I remembered. It was simply too awesome for words!!!!! I can’t wait till Jay comes to Toronto again!!
P.S. I’m in the process of organizing some pics and fancams. There aren’t that many, but I will share them with you as soon as I have a chance to upload them. =D
